The English department was represented by Stephy, Haseena Suja, and Bishnuja, while Jerin from the Physical Science department and Shinu from the Mathematics department were also included in the group. Our department head, Sreedevi Miss, provided us with essential instructions, guidance, and support to complete our teaching manual, plan selective model-based activities, and prepare teaching aids for the practice session. The class assigned to me by the Biology teacher, Sister Neethu, was 9 I.
REFLECTION ON SCHOOL EXPERIENCE
First day (14-07-25)
I was on leave so I didn't go to school.
Second day (15-07-25)
I was on leave so I didn't go to school
Third day (16-07-25)
I was on leave so I didn't go to school
Fourth day (17-07-25)
my first teaching practice after a three-day leave. On the first day of the first phase of teaching practice, I reached the school at 9:00 AM. After arriving, I met the headmistress, Pushpama teacher, and signed the attendance register. Then, I met my concerned teacher, Sister Neethu, to collect my timetable. Following that, we attended the school assembly.
That day, the school was taking photos for the students' identity cards. During the third period, the deputy headmistress asked me and another teacher trainee to assist with the process. We went to the designated area, lined up the students according to the list, helped them get their photos taken, and marked their identification numbers.
In the fourth period, I was given a substitution class for the 7th standard. During the lunch break, we participated in the noon meal programme, where the highlight of the menu was chicken curry. We helped serve the food to the students.
Later, during the seventh period, I received another substitution class, again for the 7th standard. The school day ended at 3:45 PM with a prayer and the national anthem. By 4:00 PM, we signed the register and left the school.
Fifth day (18-07-25)
On the fifth day of the first phase of our teaching practice, there was an educational strike in the Kollam district. As per the instructions of the headmistress, we all reached the school by 9:50 AM and signed the register. Since there were no duties or classes scheduled for the day, we signed out and left the school by 11:50 AM.
REFLECTION ON CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE
I got the opportunity to take a substitution class, which turned out to be a unique and insightful experience. Unlike regular classes where I come prepared with my own lesson plan, this class required me to think on my feet and quickly adapt to a new group of students.
At first, the students were a bit surprised to see a different teacher, but I introduced myself and tried to create a friendly atmosphere. Since I didn’t have specific instructions from the regular teacher, I engaged the students in a revision session related to their syllabus. I asked questions, encouraged discussion, and allowed them to express their doubts.
One of the biggest challenges was managing a class I was unfamiliar with. I had to quickly assess their behavior, attention level, and learning pace. However, I used simple strategies like group questions, interactive activities, and storytelling to keep them involved.
This experience taught me the importance of flexibility, quick decision-making, and maintaining classroom discipline without being too strict. It also reminded me that even a short class can leave a positive impact if handled with care and understanding.
In conclusion, the substitution class gave me a chance to build rapport with new students and practice classroom management in an unpredictable situation. It was a valuable learning moment in my teaching journey.
