WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Every year on June 5, World Environment Day is observed worldwide to promote environmental awareness and inspire actions that protect the planet. Initiated by the United Nations in 1972, this global observance has evolved into a significant platform for advocating sustainable change. Each year highlights a distinct theme addressing critical ecological issues such as pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, or sustainable lifestyles. Recognized in more than 150 countries, this day brings together governments, organizations, academic institutions, and individuals to join hands in preserving nature. It serves as a reminder that even the smallest efforts can create lasting positive impacts on the Earth and secure a healthier environment for the future.

At Sabarigiri College of Education, World Environment Day was marked on June 5 with a series of thoughtful and engaging activities aimed at fostering eco-consciousness among students and the community. The event was collaboratively organized by the Natural Science Department, Druta College Union, and NSS Unit. A notable part of the celebration was the active involvement of students from Sabarigiri Higher Secondary School, who were warmly welcomed as special guests.

The event was skillfully anchored by Arathi, who led the programme with energy and confidence. The celebration began with a touching poem recited by Reeba, evoking the beauty of nature and the urgent need to protect it.

Ameena then conducted a lively and thought-provoking interactive session with the students, focusing on environmental conservation. This segment encouraged students to reflect on their responsibilities and actively participate in protecting natural resources.

A cultural showcase followed, featuring a graceful dance performance by Soorya and a soul-stirring musical performance by Aiswarya, adding vibrance and charm to the event.

Muhsina and Aparna organized a creative and educational game centred on economically significant plants. Students worked in pairs—one described the plant using hints while the other guessed it. This activity offered an enjoyable way to learn about useful plant species.

As a part of the green initiative, the college principal, faculty, and teacher trainees joined hands in planting saplings across the campus. In addition, ornamental plants were introduced with the goal of developing a lush, aesthetically pleasing garden within the college grounds.

To broaden participation beyond the campus, Intercollegiate Digital Poster Making and Slogan Writing Competitions were launched. The guidelines were shared through university groups, and E-certificates were planned to honour the best entries and celebrate students' creativity.

Overall, the Environment Day celebrations at Sabarigiri College of Education not only emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship but also provided students with opportunities to engage in enriching, hands-on experiences. The united efforts of the organizing team, enthusiastic participants, and guests contributed to the event’s resounding success.
